Trip Introduction

The Shey Phoksundo Lake is an alpine fresh water lake situated in Dolpa District at an elevation of 3,611m. The lake is famous for its turquoise-colored water. You can see the entire lake nestled in between the hills from a viewpoint, the sight is truly spectacular.

Shey Phoksundo lake is holiest place in Bonpo region and lies in Shey Phoksundo National Park. The park houses a diverse flora and fauna making it ideal for medicinal herbs. Visit the ancient 900 years old Tshowa Gompa and experience the Tibetan culture of the people.

The 10-day trek is relatively easy as there are no steep ascend to high passes or slippery road making it suitable to novice and experienced trekkers alike.

Day To Day Itinerary

Day 1

Today you take a flight to Nepal watching the snow-capped mountains surrounding the landscape. On your arrival in Tribhuvan international airport our representative will be standing by to receive you. After passing custom checking you will be transported to your hotel as per booking. As we haven’t planed anything for today you can stroll around the thamel market to buy trinkets and souvenirs.

Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2

After your breakfast at the hotel, you can take a sightseeing cultural heritage tour of Nepal. Our tour guide will take you to Boudhanath and Soyambhunath Stupa both of which are of historic and cultural significance. Then head over to Pashupatinath temple one of the important ancient sites of the Hindu religion.

After your sightseeing tour in and around Kathmandu take a domestic flight to Nepalgunj. The town lies in western terai near the Indian border and the gateway to the Far west.

Day 3

Today you take a flight to Juphal situated at an elevation of 8,210 feet. The valley marks the entry to Shey Phoksundo Trek. Taking the southeast trail, we make our way to Thulo Bheri. To reach Kalagauda we take the road besides the Thuli Bheri River. Passing by Roop Ghar we can see a traditional water mill then we make our way through a maize field and reach Dunai situated at 2140m.

Day 4

Today we descend making our way through the streets of Dunai and cross over a bridge passing the Thuli Beri River. Along the river trail we pass by a few monasteries before making our way to a bridge crossing Suli Ghad River. After crossing we reach the entrance to Shey Phoksundo National Park. Our trail continues up the winding rivers making our way through to Kageni, the rocky trail consists of hemp trees and then we make our way to the tropical walnut and Maple Forest. Along the trail we can see the prayer flags fluttering in the winds, waterfalls and lush vegetation.

We cross the Suligad bridge making our way to Shyanta village. Walking uphill for another half an hour we come across a narrow trail and reach the village of Chhepka at 2678m.

Day 5

We have our breakfast and start our trek to Samduwa. You climb though a cedar forest to a winter settlement used by the people of Ringmo village. Our trek steadily heads upwards to a small settlement of Rechi. Walking further we reach Jharana Waterfall at a staggering height of 1,083 ft. It is one of the highest waterfalls situated in Nepal. The view of Phoksundo Lake can be seen from afar.

Day 6

Early in the morning you have breakfast and trek towards the village of Ringmo. Cross a bridge reaching Rike and head north making your way through the birch forest you will come cross some waterfalls. Walking further you will come across yaks grazing in the meadows of Ringmo a Tibetan village.

Day 7

Today you experience the turquoise water Phoksundo lake and explore the areas around it. From the village we head to Tshowa Gompa built on a ridge above the lake about 900 years ago. For followers of Bonpo religion the lake is regarded sacred who believes that the lake contains an underwater palace and tantric mandala of spirits. From the lake we can locate many glaciers near and above it.

Day 8

After we complete visiting the places around the region, we make preparation to head back to Chhepka. Following the stream of Phoksundo we reach Rechi. Steadily making our way to through the forest we reach Chhepka village where we can stay for the night.

Day 9

You wake up in the calm atmosphere of the village. You will have your breakfast at a local lodge and make preparation for trekking. We retrace the trail through the village. Steadily descending walking along the river, we make our way to Rupgad. Then we ascend up the hill a reach Juphal. You can stroll around the village can rest for the night.

Day 10

Have your breakfast in Juphal and take an early morning flight to Nepalgunj. Relax and stroll around Nepalgunj and take an afternoon flight to Kathmandu. Upon reaching the domestic airport our representative will drive you to your hotel. As you have rest of the day free you have ample time to rest and explore the Thamel market.
