The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, established in 1976, a crucial stopover in the East-Asian-Australasia Flyway for migratory birds. Spanning 176 square kilometers, it is Nepal’s smallest wildlife reserve but boasts a rich biodiversity that makes it a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The reserve’s diverse ecosystem, shaped by the Koshi River, includes wetlands, marshes and grasslands providing ideal conditions for a myriad of wildlife.
In addition to its impressive birdlife, Koshi Tappu is home to a range of wildlife, including the endangered Ganges River dolphin, wild water buffalo and marsh crocodile. The reserve supports 31 mammal species, 200 aquatic species and diverse flora such as riverine forests, aquatic plants and expansive grasslands.
Koshi Tappu’s subtropical climate features hot and humid summers and mild winters. The monsoon season are from June to September bringing life-sustaining rains that transform the landscape into a lush verdant paradise.

Day To Day Itinerary

  • Arrival On: Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve
  • Departure from: Kathmandu

Day 1

Enjoy a scenic domestic flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar. Upon arrival you will be greeted by our representative. Head over to your lodge where you can settle in and relax. In the evening have dinner with our representative. Our representative will explain about the upcoming program, the wildlife and the flora and fauna of the place.
Overnight stay at Koshi Tappu.

Day 2

Wake up early and take a walk along the reserve taking in the blissfull morning atmosphere. Enjoy bird watching and the beautiful views while having breakfast. Immerse yourself in the spectacle of the various migratory bird species that travel from China, Mongolia, Siberia, Turkmenistan, Kyrgystan etc. Visit the “Wildlife Information Center”, here you can find the preserved remains of the various animals and birds species. The bar-headed goose, Indian peafowl, lesser florican and the red-headed vulture are some of the migratory bird species found here. These winter migratory birds are also one of the major attraction of reserve.

Day 3

Today, you will be waking up early to take a morning walk alongside the nature’s peaceful atmosphere. You can find the various birds species flying over and perched on the trees in their natural habitat. Enjoy you breakfast with the stunning nature view.
The second half of tour take you on a boat safari on the Sapta Koshi River. The Gharial Crocodile, Gangetic Dolphins and the Wild Water Buffalo are some of the species found during the boating trip. In another part of the reserve you can take a jeep safari and and jungle walk for more birdwatching in the forest, wetlands and nearby lakes. Here you will be able to see the huge Asian Elephant walking in their herds and you might be lucky to stop a few hyenas. You can have you lunch or stop by the camp. In the evening you can interact with the village people and explore the local markets. Have your dinner at the camp and rest for the day.

Day 4

Today is the final day of the Bird watching tour in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, you can choose to wakeup early and walk around the reserve for more bird watching which you might have missed earlier. Have your breakfast and prepare your leave back to Kathmandu. Drive to Biratnagar airport and fly to Kathmandu.
