Trip Introduction

Makalu Base Camp Trek is a remarkable journey through the remote waterfalls, gorges and breathtaking landscapes of eastern Nepal. This trek leads adventurers to the base of Mount Makalu (8,485m), the world’s fifth-highest mountain, situated within the Makalu Barun National Park. Trek across several high altitude passes, including Shipton La Pass, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Makalu Base Camp Trek is famous for its rustic lodges and tea houses, which offers warm and welcoming places to rest after a long day’s trek. Renowned for its hospitality with tourist being, greeted by the friendly nature of the locals will make your trek even more memorable.

Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most rewarding and less-crowded Himalayan adventures. This trek takes you deep into the untouched beauty of Makalu Barun National Park, home to rare wildlife, lush forests, and towering peaks. Starting with a short domestic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, you’ll drive to the trekking trail that reaches Num and begin your journey through charming mountain villages like Seduwa, Tashigaon, and Yangri Kharka.

As you climb higher, the scenery changes from dense rhododendron and bamboo forests to rugged alpine landscapes with the change of altitude. The trail crosses few suspension bridges over the Arun River and climbs steep stone steps, offering unbeatable views of Mount Makalu (8,485m) the fifth highest mountain in the world along with a glimpse of nearby mountains like Chamlang, Baruntse, and Peak 6 and 7.

The trek’s highest point is Makalu Base Camp at 4,870 meters, where you’ll stand at the base of the massive Makalu massif, surrounded by towering snow-covered peaks and vast glaciers. On the way, you’ll also cross notable high passes like Shipton La and Keke La, both known for their panoramic Himalayan views.

Besides the scenery, the trek offers a rare chance to experience local Sherpa and Rai culture in some of the region’s most isolated villages. The area is rich in traditions, and meeting the locals adds a personal, authentic touch to this high-altitude adventure.

Though considered a challenging trek due to its remoteness and altitude, the trail has basic lodges and tea houses along the route, making it possible for fit trekkers with a good sense of adventure to complete it without camping.

The best seasons for the Makalu Base Camp Trek are spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November), when the weather is stable, the skies are clear, and the mountains are at their most stunning.

At Corporate Adventure Treks, we design carefully planned itineraries for trekkers and nature lovers looking for off-the-beaten-path adventures in Nepal. Our team ensures you get the best trekking experience while taking care of your safety, comfort, and cultural immersion.
