The 11 days Red Panda tracking and Bird watching tour take you through the rich landscapes of Ilam, Sandakpur and Koshi Tappu. Starting from the verdant tea gardens of Ilam, this tour takes you through the lush forests of Sandakpur, a haven for the elusive Red Panda and concludes in the wetlands of Koshi Tappu, a bird watcher’s paradise. Starting from Ilam, located in the eastern hills of Nepal. Known for its expansive tea gardens and cool, subtropical to temperate climate which provides a perfect habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Ilam is a paradise for those who love nature, the surrounding area is adorned with sloped green tea hills, vibrant rhododendrons magnolias and orchids, with the distant peaks of Kanchenjunga offering a majestic backdrop. The tranquil forests make it an ideal place to unwind and connect with nature. As you wander through Ilam, the picturesque landscapes and crisp, fresh air provide a perfect prelude to the adventures that lie ahead.

Next, we head to Sandakpur, situated at an altitude of 3,636 meters (11,929 feet). The dense forests here are home to the endangered Red Panda, along with a variety of other wildlife species such as Himalayan black bears, clouded leopards and barking deer. The region’s cool climate creates an ideal environment for Red Panda sightings. The trek to Sandakpur offers breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayas, including Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga, as well as the opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity of the region.

The tour concludes in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, located in the southeastern plains of Nepal. This wetland reserve is a globally recognized bird-watching destination, home to over 450 species of birds, including rare and migratory species making it a bird watchers dream. The subtropical climate of Koshi Tappu, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 35°C (59°F to 95°F), supports a rich diversity of aquatic and terrestrial life. As you explore the wetlands, you will be surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, with the chance to spot species such as the Bengal florican, swamp francolin and various species of ducks, storks and eagle.

Day To Day Itinerary

Day 1

Your journey begins from the domestic airport. As you ascend you can see the various mountain peaks like the Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, etc on a clear day. After 45-minute flight from Kathmandu you reach the border town of Bhadrapur. After landing at Bhadrapur, take a scenic 4-hour drive to Ilam. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the lush green tea gardens and cool climate of Ilam. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the serene surroundings.

Day 2

Dedicate this day to exploring the beautiful tea gardens of Ilam. The Tea gardens in Illam are the oldest in Nepal. At an elevation of 2,328m and suitable climate the tea farmed here are the most sought after in the world.  ,   Wander through the vast plantation, learn about tea production, tea grading with the locals and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this hill town. You can take and optional trip to Illam bazar for tea and souvenir shopping. Enjoy the atmosphere of the place surrounded by the lush green hills and serene environment.

Day 3

Have a warm breakfast at the hotel. And head over to the roadside our representative will be waiting to drive you to Dobato, a remote village surrounded by dense forests. The journey takes you through scenic landscapes, offering glimpses of local life and culture. Once you reach Dobato, you can explore the surrounding area. In evening meet up with the forest ranger for briefing of the Red Panda tracking and prepare for the next day.

Day 4

After an early morning breakfast, begin your day with an exciting trek through the forests of Dobato, guided by forest rangers and our representative head out in search of the elusive Red Panda. About 40% of the endangered species are concentrated in this area. The dense forests are filled with a rich variety of flora and fauna providing a perfect habitat for these endangered creatures. Capture the beauty of nature as you track these adorable animals.

Day 5

Start your day with a refreshing forest walk, taking in the serene beauty of the area. You might be able to catch the glimpses of animal and birds in the area. Later, drive to Sandakpur located at 3,650 meters (11,975 feet), where you will enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Eastern Himalayas. The cool climate and pristine environment make this a perfect spot to relax and take in the beauty of nature.

Day 6

After breakfast you will drive to Maipokhari, a beautiful lake surrounded by lush forests. The area is known for its rich biodiversity and is considered a sacred site by the local communities. Spend the day exploring the natural beauty, the varieties of flora and fauna and tranquility of Maipokhari.

Day 7

Today, after a refreshing early morning breakfast embark on a 3-4-hour hike to Todkey Fall, a stunning 85m waterfall nestled in the heart of nature. The hike takes you through dense forests and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. After the hike, return to Maipokhari and spend the rest of the day exploring the area.

Day 8

Leave the hills behind as you drive to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, located in the southeastern plains of Nepal. The 6-hour drive takes you through diverse landscapes, offering a glimpse of Nepal’s rich cultural and natural beauties. Upon arrival, settle into your accommodations and prepare for the next day’s bird-watching adventure.

Day 9

Dedicate this day to bird watching in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. Explore the wetlands and grasslands, where you can spot a wide variety of bird species including rare and migratory ones. The reserve serves as a sanctuary of the last remaining herd of wild water buffalo and various other birds and mammal species. With over 30 mammal, 200 aquatic and 450 bird species the reserve is a paradise for bird enthusiasts and wildlife adventures alike. Exploration around the reserve offers an endless opportunity for observation and photography.

Day 10

Continue your bird-watching adventure in Koshi Tappu, exploring different parts of the reserve. You can take an optional exploration trip in a jeep safari in another part of the jungle. Visit local villages and interact with the communities, learning about their culture and way of life. The day offers a perfect blend of wildlife observation and cultural immersion.

Day 11

Today is the final day of your tour, bid farewell to the Wildlife Reserve and drive to Biratnagar domestic airport and take a flight back to Kathmandu.
